ANNOUNCEMENTS
Annual Orientation 2011
This year, fourteen days in the month of May were dedicated to annual training within the agency. Trainings were held in Danville, Charlottesville, Gretna, Lynchburg, Bedford, Roanoke, and Altavista. That entailed much traveling for trainers, but everyone seemed to appreciate having orientation held close to their home location. Topics covered in Annual Orientation 2011 included: Human Rights, Confidentiality, Recognizing Abuse, Medication Administration Review, Universal Precautions, Documentation, Back Safety, Fire Safety, and Emergency Preparedness, and the Grievance Procedure. Trainers were: Randy Thomas (Program Services Coordinator/Behavioral Specialist), Sue Hooper (Health Coordinator), Kim Rawlings (Training Development Specialist), and Stanley Cousins (Quality Assurance, Human Rights, Public Relations Specialist). The ladies from the Human Resources Department worked very hard behind the scenes organizing the training, as well as traveling to the orientation sessions to make sure all employee file paperwork is updated. Regina Smith (Human Resources Manager), Jo Ann Weeks (Senior Human Resources Assistant), and Debbie Overstreet (Human Resources Assistant) spent a lot of time ensuring all employees/staff were scheduled for a training session, overseeing correct completion of all employee/staff paperwork, inspecting/refilling first aid kits, as well as numerous other tasks that needed to be done before, during, and after the training sessions.

There was lots of feedback about the training. Examples include:
- “I appreciated the balance of being talked „to? and talked „with? in the various presentations. Good presenters, not boring or condescending.”
- “Great presentations! Professionalism is apparent in Lamano staff.”
- “Training had a good time frame and covered a lot of useful information.”
- “I would like to see all support providers in one training and all in-home providers in a separate training.”
- “Training near our own work location was good.”
- “I learned that a behavior plan can be put in place. I didn?t know this!”
There have been many requests for a copy of the quote that was used in the Documentation training: “In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?” -Carl Rogers

Johnsia comes from a very musical family and has been receiving guitar lessons for the past year. She recently performed with her music coach for staff and peers at her day program. They sang and played several songs. It was quite impressive and she looked like she was having a ball! |

Program Manager at Lynchburg Day Activity Center, would like to recognize employee Lamont Barbour for a recent act that goes above and beyond his work expectations. An individual was leaving day support one day to catch the bus. Lamont had just returned from a transportation run and noticed the individual was waiting at the bus stop when it began to rain. Lamont came into the building, got the umbrella, and ran out to the stop to wait with the individual. Heather stated that everyone who saw the picture was in tears because it was so sweet and no one asked Lamont to do it, he just knew it was the right thing to do. |
