“We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different
and yet the same.  — Anne Frank

AGENCY SPOTLIGHT:

TURNPIKE HOUSE

The Turnpike House, known to some as Turnpike Manor, is one of the agency’s six residential group homes. The house is a split-level Colonial-style home set upon a hill off Route 460 in the Thaxton community. Robert and Ronald are roommates and live in this house. They take an active role in the
upkeep of their home. They assist with food preparation and keep the home clean and tidy. Each has personalized his own room and is proud to show it to anyone who visits.
These two individuals get along well and enjoy doing a variety of activities together. At home they play yard games and walk the grounds for exercise. When the weather is nice they enjoy grilling dinner and eating outside on the lower patio. Often they sit on the upper balcony to view the wildlife or watch the hummingbirds dart in and out to get nectar from the feeder. The home backs up to a wooded area which allows the men to watch wild turkey, geese, deer, and squirrels.
Inside Robert and Ronald spend time in the upstairs den socializing and actively participating as they watch their favorite westerns, sports, or game shows. The lower level recreation room has a game table and plenty of space for craft activities. There is also exercise equipment which they use when given a bit of encouragement.

In addition to enjoying time at home staff provides a variety of opportunity for involvement in the community. Already this year they have been able to watch the Harlem Ambassadors play an exhibition basketball game at Liberty High School. They have enjoyed Easter Egg hunts, picnics in various parks and special dances. They have attended classes through College for Living at CVCC and have enrolled in activities sponsored by Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. The most recent activity was Fishing with the Pros. They liked fishing so much that arrangements have been made to allow them to continue going to a stocked pond. These guys are always on the go. Anytime you enter the house they are asking to go out to eat or to go purchase sodas and snacks. They also enjoy going to visit and spend time with their friends at other Agency group homes.

Robert and Ronald are settled in the routine of their home, but Turnpike Manor is a large house that currently has two unoccupied bedrooms. Occasionally individuals have come for respite visits, but the men would love to have other ambulatory house mates to live with them permanently.

AGENCY NEWS:

During recent chart audits, managers identified a sample of exemplary note writing by one of our In-Home Support Specialist, Katrina Smith. An example of her notes is as follows:

5/4/10

3,10

When I asked James if he was hungry he replied “yes.” I then asked him where did he want to go eat and he gave no response. I then asked if he wants to go to Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, or Burger King and he said “pizza pizza please.” When the waitress asked what we would like to drink, James responded “pepsi.” I g ave him verbal praise for being able to order his own drink. When it came time to place an order for his f o od I supported him with placing his order. James told the waitress “sweet” and blew her a kiss when she put his food on the table. Katrina did a wonderful job documenting that she gave James choices, describing his response to questions and the situation, demonstrating what he was able to do independently and how she supported him when necessary.
